SKY IS THE LIMIT

September 26, 2010

We have always considered the New Scoial Media or NSM as a new way to promote, and facilitate an organization or a brand’s reputation and name. We’ve seen in the previous entries that the NSM tools support the traditional, or even replace them, with new digital and innovative ways of managing the brand. But then, everything done in excess is bad.

The new social media is primarily concerned with promoting good image, publicity, and increasing sales and customer engagement. There are many ways on how to utilize NSM in businesses and personal activities. There is twitter, facebook, youtube, blogs, etc. These areas serve as the venue for brands, products to promote themselves and generate customers, loyalists, advocates, and the likes. But since most people do go online for different purposes, it is a good venue for advertisers, marketers, and enterprises come into the picture and deliver its purpose.

But these areas also open the doors for advertising and marketing in cheaper and easier ways. As this is the case, it is very likely that they will take advantage of it, and for some, overly do it. Once a brand is overexposed it becomes commoditized, diluted, and unwanted. People would feel like they are bombarded and presented with ads, and pressured as the same kind of information is always pushed to them. It may be good to present them the good things of a brand or product for some time but not too much.

One is enough. Two is too much. Three is a poison that can kill a person.

It was said that a little is enough. It doen’t literally mean that use only one means, it says to make an action directed and minimal. And overdoing it would not always bring good things, and may even cause the destruction of a brand or product.

Have you ever experienced being bombarded with similar wall posts of application in facebook, unnecessary and unimportant tweets every blink of an eye? Well we might have experienced it at some time, and do not feel good about it. For people, we call them ‘vain’ and sometimes, categorize them coming from low social class, and mainstream.

Most people do not like these kinds of events that are overly reported and publicized even though they are of no significance or it is because of the advertiser or marketer’s aim to exhaust and use all possible areas for improvement and publicity. Hence, this leads to the over exposure of the brand through the social media use.

Overuse of social media for product or brand promotion can also lead to brand fatigue and overexposure. While it might somehow result to higher awareness and reach, it is still not purely logical and assuring in using it always.

Each SNM has its own purpose for use. And as a way to ensure its helpfulness and effectiveness in advertising and marketing integrations, here are some guidelines to follow when using NSM.

Guidelines in using New social media for business

1. Make a plan

Anything that has no plan might cause its people to do random things that may not be the very efficient and effective. Along with making a plan, one must always know the audience it has to tap and in what way it has to be. In this way of a adopting the habit of making a plan, everything will be prepared and guided to work as organized

2. Set the parameters of the SM tools

Along with making a plan, create parameters for your NSM activities and actions.Aside from doing an online effort for a product or brand, it is also necessary to have a definite plan accompanied by parameters and limitations. When it is already planned, there will be no cramming for things and limited advertising and NSM exposure.

People hate things that go mainstream and feel more of things that are exclusive to them and even targeted. If ever a product or brand is overly exposed, it employs too much push effort, which even breaks the interest of the people due to the personal interaction encountered.

It is also good to know what kinds of posts are needed for a social networking site, the benchmarking they did, what and how tweets and posts should be in. Thereby reducing the amount of possibility for social media overuse and brand fatigue.

3. Use your plan

Everything would be non-sense unless it is properly facilitated and well performed. It might be the case that you used social media but not efficiently and effectively, therefore, one must have a plan and always stick to it or at least follow it as a guide.

Next thing is that having plans not being followed is like having nothing. Although we are intelligent animals, we are also rational people who sometimes make unsound judgement. And so, it is good that we have a plan, which is backed up by research and analysis, and follow it. In this way, people who use NSM would not be misunderstood and susceptible to overuse of the tools.

4. Evaluate and Sustain

New social media efforts are not ‘one big time’ event. It works with a continuous process of maintaining and improving efforts to capture market and build good relations. As for every business, it is always not considered effective if it only increased its sales for one day and dropped it the next day. For anything to be considered successful in this kind of field, one must be able to reach the highest level and maintain its position. Consequently, NSM tools and strategies must not be like bubbles that appeared and suddenly vanish from the air. For instance, twitter, facebook, websites must be updated regularly to stimulate interest, attention, engagement, and finally good relationship with the audience, customer, client, advocate(in reference to the loyalty ladder).

NSM efforst must not always be overdone. Though we have the control and power how to use it, it is still not reasonable to use it as if sky is the limit. Overexposure of a brand, product, or any service being commodified intensifies the pressure it promotes to the audience to push them to buy or avail it.

Too much advertising or marketing kills, cause anything in excess is a poison. So now, who says that the sky is AND should be the limit?

Social Change in the Clicks

September 25, 2010

Change is an overly used word and it has served to be the promising component of every advocacy or motivation of groups and institutions. But then the idea of change has already seated its position in the context of having social change. Since everyone wants to have a better life, environment, and society, people would always think of the need to revolutionize and revise the current situation.

The change makers…

FB, WP, TWTR, TWBN

It has been always used as a tag-line, a name, an advocacy, to change the environment. Why would we want to?It’s because people are selfish beings. We want to have something better than what it is now. Though we say that the current situation is not that good, we could still life out in the way it is right no. But no! There are a lot of movements for change and improvement. Change is even assumed to equate its meaning to improvement or development.

In the past when we want to participate for this acts towards change for the environment or to envision social change, we need to be present and personally be there to show our support. Then there also came a signature campaign for showing support for this advocacy for change. And now, as social media comes into the picture of every people’s life, it was also utilized by groups, sectors, institutions in propagating their goals.

My new LSS.

September 24, 2010

While doing my blog post, I’ve been listening to songs from Train’s album Save Me San Francisco. Even though this particular song, “If It’s Love” was done playing, I was still singing it in my head. With this, I finally made a relationship with the song and new social media.

Lyrics to If It’s Love
While everybody else is getting out of bed
I’m usually getting in it
I’m not in it to win it
And there’s a thousand ways you can skin it

My feet have been on the floor
Flat like an idle singer
Remember winger
I digress
I confess you are the best thing in my life
